{"id":1673,"date":"2023-04-14T10:29:27","date_gmt":"2023-04-14T09:29:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aim.gov.ie\/?p=1673"},"modified":"2023-04-14T10:29:29","modified_gmt":"2023-04-14T09:29:29","slug":"the-lamh-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aim.gov.ie\/ga\/the-lamh-project\/","title":{"rendered":"The L\u00e1mh Project"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#168e92\">Wouldn&#8217;t it be great if everyone could say Hello to everyone?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u00e1mh is a manual sign system used by children and adults with intellectual disability and communication needs in Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u00e1mh opens up a person&#8217;s world and is a powerful communication tool. People are able to use signs to ask for what they want, to answer questions and to take part in conversations. It helps the L\u00e1mh user to understand what is being said and to be understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With L\u00e1mh, speech is always used with signs and key words in a sentence are signed. L\u00e1mh currently has 586 signs &#8211; new signs for technology, sports and other general signs were added in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can find a list of all L\u00e1mh signs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lamh.org\/500lamhsigns\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using L\u00e1mh signs can reduce frustration, as the L\u00e1mh user is able to use signs to ask for what they want, to answer and to take part in conversation. Signing encourages eye contact and attention to movement; skills that are important for supporting speech development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The L\u00e1mh Project aims to spread the word of L\u00e1mh and encourages everyone to learn how to sign Hello.
